Mars in Virgo
Mars in the second of Mercury’s signs is the epitome of precision, in word and in action. Here we find the hallmark of the artisan, pure craftsmanship, and the honing of skills. I have seen this placing in the charts of those whose work requires the “cutting edge,” such as picture framing or tiling, and in those who have exceptional talents in the worlds of technical drawing, fine art, and intricate design. This Mars is measured, diligent, patient, and painstaking, and the attention to detail is second to none. These guys know how to “sweat the small stuff,” a concept that lies at the heart of astronaut Chris Hadfield’s (b. August 29, 1959) philosophy and NASA training. Trust me, if you ever decided to travel into space, you would want Colonel Hadfield with his Sun, Venus, and Mars all in Virgo at the controls.
In love matters, this placing can be problematic. The red planet can find it hard to sizzle in Virgo, even though, as noted earlier, Virgo’s “prim and proper” reputation is misleading. However, the particular combination of Mars in Virgo can signal issues with sexuality or celibacy. Stephen Fry (b. August 24, 1957), with both Sun and Mars in Virgo, struggled to keep his homosexuality secret during his teenage years at private school, and by his own account did not engage in sexual activity for 16 years from 1979 until 1995.
In my own client work, this placing has frequently shown for those whose happiness is thwarted by the quest for non-existent perfection, for celibates, or for those in platonic yet otherwise functioning marriages.
in a nutshell: picky, fastidious, exacting.
Mars in Libra DETRIMENT
Traditional astrology tells us that Mars is weakened by being in Venus’ sign. In basic psychological terms this makes sense, as Mars is the god of war and the go-getter, whereas Libra is the sign of negotiation and peace. There is an obvious conflict, but this does not mean that Mars in Libra is ineffective. On the contrary, the fight (Mars) for peace (Libra) can be a major concern for these individuals, such as it was for John Lennon (October 9, 1940–December 8, 1980), whose iconic songs “Give Peace a Chance” and “Imagine” were both taken up as anti-war anthems.
Mars in Libra is also brilliantly expressed through working (Mars) relationships (Libra). Both William (b. June 21, 1982) and Catherine (b. January 9, 1982), the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, have Mars in this sign—William at nine degrees and Kate at ten degrees. This reflects their unity as they go about their royal duties. In my own client work I have found that Mars-in-Libra people have a lot of charm but rely heavily on their partner, often to the extent of feeling aimless and unmotivated when having to do things alone or feeling like a failure in their (rare) single periods.
These Mars people are social animals and need others to inspire and encourage them, so they tend to under-achieve if left to their own devices for too long.
